Alert: Changed /root Permissions after Installing
WP8.1
per WORD PERFECT 8.1 FULL INSTALL how-to (10/16/01)
A WP8.1 user brought this to my attention. After
installing WP8.1 per
my how -to, the permissions of /root were changed to 755,
allowing
"others" access. Before installing WP8.1 check your
/root permissions
and restore them after WP8.1 is installed.
Interim procedure for installing Word Perfect 8.1 in
Mandrake 8.1
WORD PERFECT 8.1 FULL INSTALL how-to (10/16/01)
There are some problems with using Mandrake 8.1's alien and
RPM to follow theWORD PERFECT 8.1 FULL INSTALL
how-to procedure.
This is an INTERIM solution.
Mandrake 8.1 does not convert the three font Debian packages.
The
type1install and main WP8.1 packages probably will convert.
If your type1install and wp-full files converted to RPM, you
can
install them conventionally, otherwise convert them also to tar
files.
You can convert the three font Deb's to tar files using
Mandrake's
alien. Copy or move the font tar files (and other tar files if
needed)
to /. That means moving them to the very top of your system's
file
structure, not just /root! With the font tar files in /,
execute tar
-xvzf on them.
With the files installed, follow the remaining steps 7, 8 &
9 in the
WORD PERFECT 8.1 FULL INSTALL how-to.
If executing step 9 fails (e.g. error: file not found) you will
need
to download and install ld.so. (ld.so-1.9.5-13.i386.rpm
works.)
If step 9 still fails, you will need to install
libc-5.3.12-35mdk.i586,rpm from the 3d Mandrake 8.1 CD or
downloaded.
If you are unfamiliar with using tar, you can do a practice
install from
a temporary directory. Tar will install the files, creating
duplicate
directories, in a tree extending from the temporary directory.
This
installation will not work. This is why the tar files must be
installed
from /, so that the components are copied into the actual
destination
directories.
